Securing the Abbey’s music for future generations
Music plays an integral role in the Abbey’s life and worship. Our choirs enrich the daily services and provide joy to thousands at the Abbey’s carol services. Generations of young people have benefited, and continue to benefit, from the musical life and education the Abbey provides.
Music at the Abbey costs £150,000 a year and we receive no regular financial support from the government or Church of England.
The Foundation is raising funds to secure the Abbey’s music for future generations, and to extend the outreach and education opportunities provided through the musical life of the Abbey.

Milton and Grove Organs
The Abbey has two fine 4-manual organs.
The Milton organ is an historic instrument, built originally in 1631 for Magdalen College, Oxford. Briefly in the possession of Oliver Cromwell at Hampton Court Palace, it was reputedly played by the poet John Milton. Purchased for the Abbey in 1737, it was rebuilt and reconstructed by Kenneth Jones with mechanical action and 68 speaking stops in 1997, and remains the Abbey’s main instrument.
The Grove organ is a wonderful Victorian instrument built by Michel and Thynne in 1885 which was purchased for the Abbey by Revd C.W. Grove in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
